THE COMING Chinese New Year will still be a quiet one. The Government has no intention of lifting the ban on fireworks.
The ban was imposed in 1967. “We banned it for the sake of safety,” a spokesman for the Government Secretariat Mrs Daisy Lo said.
When asked if the problem of danger can be solved by Government education or by marking out zones, the spokesman said firmly, “If the ban is lifted, things are going to get out of control.”
Police warned that offenders may be fined or put into jail. Maximum sentence would be six-month imprisonment or $500 fine.
