CUTTING nails, cleaning ears, soaking and changing the whole style of pets are becoming regular services that pets cosmeticians provide to their clients, when their master are busy or have trouble handling their pets.

Pet-keeping trend in Hong Kong not only increased the number of pet owners, but also gave raise to the pet cosmeticians over the past few years.

Lay Nai-kin, a pet cosmetician of K.K. Pet & Beauty House, noted that the main reason for the growing demand is the pet owners prefer spending money to spending time on their pets.

The other pet cosmetician, Ritz Fung, who is running her Greatwall Professional Pet Grooming Services at Mong Kok, said that Hong Kong’s humid climate is difficult for pets caring, improper handling may cause skin diseases on the pets. She thought it is natural for the owners to seek professional services.

“I’ll take my two dogs there and ask for medication soaking and hair trimming twice a month because I don’t know how to take care of them, and I’m very busy too,” said Ringo Fung Wing-ho, owner of two dogs.

The price for the services is depending on the categories, ranging from $160 to $280 on average. The services fall into two categories: common and special.

The common services include bathing, hair trimming, nails cutting, pets decorating, eyes and ears cleaning, which pets may need the services two or three times a summer. But the special services, like medication soaking to prevent cooties and skin diseases, are not frequently required.

Although providing such services is challenging, most pets cosmeticians did not have any professional training.

“I think talent and patience are more important in being a pet cosmetician,” Fung commented.
