Origin The dried tuberous root of Euphorbia Kansui T. N. Liou ex T. P. Wang (Euphorbiaceae).
Production Regions Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan.
Macroscopic Features Oval, long cylindrical or linKed shape, 1~5cm long, 0.5~2.5cm in diameter. Externally off-white or yellowish-white, remnants of brown outer sKin at the indented area. Brittle texture, easily broKen; fractured surface is powdery white; xylem has a slightly radial arrangement; long cylindrical pieces have a strongly fibrous nature. faint odor; slightly sweet and spicy taste.
Quality Requirements Superior medicinal material is white, fat, large, powdery.
Properties Bitter; cold; toxic.
Functions Drains water, expels rheum, removes swelling, disperses stagnation. Apply to edema, tumescence, dropsy in thoracic and abdominal cavities, phlegm and retained fluid, shortness of breath due to adverse rising of qi, unsmooth urine and stool, externally used to swelling carbuncle and sore.
Technical Terms 'Spots’: This refers to the surface of the medicinal material has spots of a different color around the circumference, which are also called ‘scars (ba)’. The spots of gan sui are brown-colored remnants of outer sKin.
