Origin The dried rhizome of Fagopyrum dibotrys (D. Don) Hara (Polygonaceae)
Production Regions Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu.
Macroscopic Features Rhizomes in an irregular cluster, often with bulbous branches, uneven length and size, diameter 1~4cm. Externally brown to grayish-brown, with dense round joints and irregular longitudinal wrinkles, and numerous rootlets or scars of rootlets; apex has remnants of stem. Hard texture, not easily broken, cut surface is pale yellowish-white to yellowish-brown, with radial striations and pith at the center. faint odor, slightly astringent taste.
Quality Requirements Superior medicinal material is hard, large.
Properties Slightly Acrid, astringent; cool
Functions Clears heat, resolves toxin, invigorates blood, resolves abscess, dispels wind-damp and sore, snake and insect bites. Apply to pulmonary abscess, cough due to lung heat, throat swelling pain, diarrhea, wind-damp impediment, injuries from falls, swollen abscess and cancer.
