Origin The dried leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv.(Eucommiaceae).
Production Regions Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan; generally a cultivated product.
Macroscopic Features Leaf is elliptical or oval, 7~15cm long, 3.5~7cm wide. Externally yellowish-green or yellowish-brown, slightly lustrous. Apex gradually narrows, base is round to a wide wedge shape; edge has saw-teeth with short leaf stem. Brittle texture, breaks easily when twisted; fractured surface has a few silvery-white gluey threads connected. faint odor; slightly bitter taste.
Quality Requirements Superior medicinal material is intact, yellowish-green, without foreign matter.
Properties Slightly Acrid; warm.
Functions Supplements the liver and kidney, strengthens sinew and bone. Apply to deficiency of liver and kidney, dizziness, lumbar and back pain, weakness of sinew and bone.
Remark Euconmmia (Eucommia ulmoides) is listed as "Vulnerable" in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
