Origin The dried root of Dichroa febrifuga Lour. (Saxifragaceae).
Production Regions Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou.
Macroscopic Features Main roots often thick, straight and long, some cylindrical but irregularly twisted, 6~20mm diameter; many lateral roots, with numerous thin roots. Externally grayish-brown, with irregular longitudinal and horizontal cleavages. Hard texture, difficult to break; fractured surface is yellowish-white or pale yellow. Cortex is thick, rarely falls off; inner surface is smooth and sticky. Externally resemble to chang shan, but with white center on fractured surface, so called ‘white chang shan’. faint odor; taste bland. Pieces are slightly yellow.
Quality Requirements Superior medicinal material is hard texture, with pale yellow fractured surface.
Properties Bitter, acrid; cold; toxic.
Functions Clears heat and interrupts malaria, relieves toxin. Apply to malaria, vomiting and phlegm drool.
Technical Terms 'Chicken bone chang shan’: Chang shan has a hard texture and is skinny and smooth, with a shape similar to a chicken bone.
