Origin The dried root bark or the bark near the root of Pseudolarix kaempferi Gord.(Pinaceae).
Production Regions Primarily produced in the Chinese provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan, Fujian.
Macroscopic Features Irregular long strips, wrinkled and slightly rolled, uneven size, 2~5mm thick. Externally grayish-yellow, rough, with wrinkles and grayish-white horizontal lenticels, rough skin often falls off and is scale-like, reddish-brown where the skin has fallen off. Inner surface is yellowish-brown to reddish-brown, flat, with fine longitudinal lines. Pliable texture, fractured surface cracks and falls off by layers. faint odor, bitter taste and astringent. Tree bark is flake-like, about 8mm thick, relatively thick rough skin; the outer surface is cracked and the inner surface is relatively rough.
Quality Requirements Superior medicinal material is thick, long, firm.
Properties Acrid, warm, toxic.
Functions Kills worms, relieves itching. Apply to itching scabies and tinea.
