Description Shrubs or small trees. Shoots slightly pubescent, bark grey brown. Stipules linear sickle-shaped, 5-10mm long, pubescent, nearly persistent or caduceus. Even-pinnate compound leaves, rachis and petioles flat-square, leaves 10-15cm long, with 2-3 stick-shaped glands between 2 or 3 pairs of leaflets in the lowest part of leaf axis, glands 1-2mm long; leaflets 5-10 pairs, oval or long elliptic, 2-5cm long, 1-1.5cm wide, entire, apex obtuse and more or less depressed, base round, rarely wedge-shaped, leaf surface green, glabrous, back side pink white, sparsely pubescent, stipules linear, curved, about 1cm long; small petioles 1-1.5mm long, pubescent, petioles 1.5-3cm long. Racemes borne in upper leaf axils of branches, 5-8cm long, with 10-15 flowers, total peduncles 2.5-5cm long; bracts oval-oblong, pubescent outside, acute, 5-8mm long; pedicels 1-2cm long; sepals 5, ranging in size, outer 2 pieces ovate, 3-4mm long, inner 3 pieces 6-8mm long, with 3-5 veins; petals bright yellow or dark yellow, oval to obovate, nearly equally large, 1.5-2cm long, valvate stalks 1-1.5mm long; fertile stamens 10, lower 2-3 filaments longer, 3-4mm long, the remaining 1-2mm long, anthers oblong, nearly equally long, 5-7mm long; ovary linear, slightly pubescent, stigma not prominent, style bent. Pods barred, flat, 7-10cm long, 0.8-1.5cm wide, apex with slender beaks, glabrous, fruit neck about 5mm long, fruit stalk prominent. Seeds 10-12, flat, shiny, 8mm long, 4mm wide. Flowering and fruiting: nearly whole year.
Distribution Growing by villages at altitude 750-1,500m, on roadsides or in parks. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hainan, Kaiyuan, Mengzi, Hekou, Xishuangbanna and etc. Also distributed in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia and Polynesia. Widely cultivated in tropical regions. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Guangxi and Yunnan.
Part Used Medical part: leaves, flowers and fruits. Chinese name: Huangkui.
Harvest & Processing Harvested throughout the year, sun-dried or used fresh.
Properties & Actions Bitter, cool.Leaves: clearing heat, relieving cough; laxation. Flowers and fruits: clearing heat and arresting bleeding.
Indications & Usage Leaves: Swelling pain of throat, cough due to wind-heat evil, constipation.Flowers, fruits: to treat haemorrhoid haemorrhage. Leaves: daily 5-15g, decocted or made as drinking tea; flowers and fruits: daily 10-15g, decocted.
