Description Small shrub, 1-3m tall. Multi-branched. Branchlets slender, purple red, slightly with stellate hairs when young. Single leaves opposite; petioles 2-5mm long; blades obovate-lanceolate, apex long-pointed or caudate-pointed, both sides glabrous, back side with dense small yellow glandular dots; lateral veins 5-6 pairs. Cymes axillary, thin, 1-2.5cm wide, 2-3 divergent; peduncles about 1cm long, slightly with stellate hairs, glabrous when fruiting; with linear bracts; calyx cup-shaped, apex with unclear 4 teeth or nearly truncate; corolla purple, 1.5-2cm long, apex 4 lobed, obtuse-round; stamens 4, filaments about twice as long as corolla, anthers oval, small; ovary glabrous, with yellow glandular dots. Fruits spherical, purple, about 2mm in diameter. Flowering: May to June, Fruiting: July to November.
Distribution Growing in low hills or thickets at altitude 600m. Distributed in East and South China, Hebei, Taiwan, Henan, Hubei and Guizhou. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Henan, Hubei, Guangdong and etc.
Part Used Medical part: leaves. Chinese name: Zizhu.
Harvest & Processing Collected in July to August and sun-dried.
Chemistry Leaf contains callicarpa undiflora, callicarpa bodinieriterpinene and its monoacetate, β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, flavonoid glycoside, condensed tannin, neutral resins, saccharides, Mg, Ca and ferric salt, etc.
Pharmacology Hemostatic and antibacteria.
Properties & Actions Bitter harsh, cool.Astringing to arrest bleeding, clearing heat and detoxifying.
Indications & Usage Hematemesis, empsyxis, non-traumatic hemorrhage, hemafecia, hematuria, gingival bleeding, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, skin purpura, traumatic hemorrhage, superficial infections, toxic swelling, venomous snake bites, burns.Internal: decocting, 10-15g, fresh used 30-60g; or powdered, 1.5-3g. 1-3 times per day. External: appropriate amount, fresh used, triturated for application; or powdered and scattered.
Examples Treat gastric and intestinal hemorrhage: powder of dried beautyberry leaf 3-5 fen. Prepare with cold boiled water, take every 4 hours; take 2 qian of dried callicarpa dichotoma powder, decoct in water and drink frequently as tea.
