Description Perennial herb, 15-30cm high. Rhizome thick, neck covered with brown remnant petiole. Stems erect, stout, upper part with white dense tomentum. Leaves extremely dense, leaf blades oblanceolate or spathulate, length 8-15cm, width 15-30cm, margin with undulate serrature, the front end of leaf slightly pointed, base attenuate into petiole, above with arachnoid tomentum, densely brown tomentose below. Capitulum, numerous, sessile, arranged as oval spiciform on upper part of stem; bracteal leaf lanceolate bar-shaped, dense white tomentose; involucre hemispherical; involucral bracts of inner layer lanceolate, apex long acuminate, with dark brown long hair, involucral bracts of outer layer bar-shaped lanceolate, ca. 2.5cm long, front end long acuminate, with white dense tomentum; flowers white. Achenes, ca. 3mm long; pappus black brown, the outer layer short, caducous, pachytrichous, inner layer plumose. Flowering: June to July.
Distribution Growing on rock patch or crevices of mountains. Distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet and etc. Mainly produced in Southwest Sichuan, East Tibet, Gongshan of Yunnan and etc.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant with roots. Chinese name: Xuelianhua.
Harvest & Processing Excavated the whole plant in June-July per year when flowering, removed earth and air-dried.
Chemistry Whole plant contains scopoletin, umbelliferone and p-hydroxyacetophenone, etc.
Pharmacology Anti-inflammatory, pain-killing, pregnancy interrupting and uterus-exciting.
Properties & Actions Sweet, little bitter, warm.Warming kidney and invigorating yang, regulating menstruation and relieving hemorrhage.
Indications & Usage Impotence, relative weakness in the loins and knees, leukorrhea, irregular menstrual periods, rheumatic arthralgia, hemorrhage caused by trauma.Oral administration: decocting, 6-12g; or made as medicinal liquor. External application: appropriate amount, smashed for applying.
Examples 1. Snow blindness, toothache: medusa windhairdaisy 6-12g. Eat freshly, or decoct in water and swallow.
2. Traumatic hemorrhage: an appropriate amount of medusa windhairdaisy. Apply to the affected lesions.
3. Asthenia and dizziness, tinnitus and blurred vision: whole herb of medusa windhairdaisy 9-15g, decoct and swallow 2-3 times a day.
