Description Deciduous tree, up to 8m. Bark dark brown, multi-branched, spines 1-2cm long, or without spines. Simple leaves alternate; with stipules, ovoid, margin serrated; petiole 2-6cm long; leaves wide ovate, triangular-ovate to rhombus-ovate, 6-12cm long, 5-8cm wide, 2-4 pairs of pinnate lobes, apex acuminate, base wide cuneate, margin sharp and irregularly serrate, glossy above, pubescent along the vein below. Flowers 10-12 become corymb; pedicel pubescent; calyx tube campanulate, green, top 5 teeth, base fused into a cup-shape; corolla white, 8-15mm in diam., petals 5, distinct, obovate or nearly round; stamens 20, unequal length, anther pink; pistil 1, carpel 5, inferior ovary, 5 chambers, 1 ovule per chamber, styles 5, stigma round. Pome nearly spherical, ca. 2.5cm in diam., crimson, with numerous yellowish white small spots, outward persistent calyx at the top. Seeds 5. Flowering May to June, fruiting: August to October.
Distribution Growing on sandy lands near rivers or slopes of dry gravel. Can be cultivated. Distributed in the south of Northeast China, North China, Jiangsu and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Henan, Shandong, Hebei and etc.
Part Used Medical part: mature fruits and leaves. Chinese name: mature fruit: Shanzha; leaves: Shanzhaye.
Harvest & Processing Mature fruit: harvested mature fruits in autumn, cut into thick pieces and dried. Leaves: harvested in summer and autumn and sun-dried.
Chemistry Contains hyperin, arbutin, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B2, etc.
Pharmacology Digestion-promoting, beneficial to cardiovascular system, blood-pressure-lowering, lipid-lowering, antioxidant, immunity-enhancing, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer.
Properties & Actions Mature fruit: sour, sweet, little warm. Leaves: sour, normal. Mature fruits: sour, sweet, little warm. Leaves: sour, neutral.Mature fruits: promoting digestion and invigorating the stomach, activating qi-flow and dissipating stasis. Leaves: activating blood and resolving stasis, diffusing and freeing heart vessel, regulating qi-flow and relaxing collaterals.
Indications & Usage Mature Fruits: used for dyspeptic disease due to over conumption of meat, fullness of chest and abdomen, abdominal pain due to dysentery, amenorrhea due to stagnation of blood, blood stasis post partum, prickling pain of heart and abdomen, hernia pain; hyperlipemia. Leaves: used for qi stagnation and blood stasis, chest distress and shortness of breath, palpitations and forgetfulness, vertigo and tinnitus; coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, hyperlipemia, the abovementioned symptoms due to insufficient blood supply of cerebral arteries.Mature fruit: oral administration: decocting, 6-12g, or made as pills or powders. External application: appropriate amount, prepared decoction for washing or triturated for application. Use with care in case of deficiency of spleen and stomach. Unsuitable for eating too many raw fruits. Leaf: oral administration: decocting, 3-10g, prepared tea for drinking.

Leaves:
Hypertension: Chinese hawthorn leaves, decoct in water and drink as tea.
