Family & Genus Apiaceae, Notopterygium
Description Perennial herbs, 60-150cm tall. Stem upright, hollow, lavender with vertical pinstripes. Basal leaves and lower leaves tripinnately trifoliolate, leaflets 3-4 pairs, terminal lobes ovate-lanceolate to oblong-ovate; upper leaves simplified to form sheath. Compound umbel acrogenous or axillary; phyllaries 3-6, petals 5, white. Mericarp oblong, main rib winged, vittae conspicuous. Flowering: July to September. Fruiting: August to October.
Distribution Growing in alpine thickets or grass. Distributed in Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and Gansu. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Sichuan (said Chuan qianghuo), Gansu, Qinghai (said Xi qianghuo); also produced in Shaanxi, Yunnan, Xinjiang and Tibet.
Part Used Medical part: rhizoma and roots. Chinese name: Qianghuo.
Harvest & Processing Excavated in spring and autumn, removed the fibrous roots and sediment, and dried. Removed impurities, washed, moistened, cut into thick slices and dried.
Chemistry Contains volatile oil, coumarin, organic acids, fatty acids, amino acids and sugars, etc. Main composition: α-pinene, β-pinene, and limonene.
Pharmacology Antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-arrhythmia, etc.
Properties & Actions Acrid, bitter, warm pungent, bitter, warm.Dispelling wind, dissipating cold, eliminating dampness and relieving pain.
Indications & Usage Used for headaches caused by common cold induced by pathogenic wind-cold, rheumatic arthralgia, aching pain in the shoulder and back.Oral administration: decocting, 10-25g; or made as pills or powders, 3-9g.
Examples 1. Damp evil due to exotenous wind-cold, aversion to cold pyrexia, headache without sweat: notopterygium 1.5 liang, divaricate saposhnikovia root 1.5 liang, atractylodes 1.5 liang, wild ginger 5 fen, szechwan lovage rhizome ligusticum 1 liang, angelica dahurica 1 liang, rehmannia 1 liang, baikal skullcap1 liang, ural licorice 1 liang. Decoct in water and swallow.
2. Miasma, abdominal distension, chills and fever: atractylodes (prepared), baikal skullcap, immature orange fruit, pinelliae tuber, China thorowax, szechwan lovage rhizome ligusticum, incised notopterygium rhizome, orange peel of equal amounts, ural licorice with dose halved, fresh ginger 3 pieces. Decoct in water, warm up and swallow.
