Description Stem up to 1.5m, no branches, glabrous, rarely covered with hairs. Cauline leaves 3-6 whorled, ovate or linear-lanceolate, 2-14cm long, margin with serration, sparsely short hairs on both sides, sessile or with not prominent petioles. Narrow panicle, inflorescence branches (cyme) most whorled, slender or very short, a few flowers or single flower can grow. Calyx glabrous, calyx tube inverted basiconic, lobes subulate, 1-2.5cm long, entire; corolla cylindrical-thin campanulate, mouth slightly constricted, blue or blue-purple, 0.7-1.1cm long, lobes triangular, 2cm long; flower disc thin tubular, 2-4cm long; style ca. 2cm long. Capsules spherical-basiconic or ovate-basiconic, 5-7mm long. Seeds oblong-basiconic, slightly flat, with one edge, expanded to one white band. Flowering: July to September.
Distribution Growing in grasslands or thickets. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, East Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Guangxi, Southeast Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. Also distributed in Korean Peninsula, Japan, south of Russian East Serbia and Far East, North Vietnam. The medicinal materials are produced in Guizhou, Henan, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and Jiangsu.
Part Used Medical part: dried roots Chinese name: Nanshashen.
Harvest & Processing Excavated in spring and autumn, removed fibrous roots and scraped off rough bark when fresh, well washed and sun-dried.
Chemistry Mainly contains β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol-β-D- pyranoid glucose glucoside, araxerone and octacosanoic acid.
Pharmacology Immune-system-regulating and phlegm-resolving, anti-fungus and cardiotonic.
Properties & Actions Sweet, little cold.Nourishing yin and clearing lung, reducing phlegm and reinforcing qi.
Indications & Usage Cough with lung heat, over-strained cough induced by yin asthenia, dry cough and sticky phlegm, asthenic qi-yin, feverish dysphoria and dry mouth.Oral administration: decocting, 10-15, or fresh products: 15-30g, made as pills or powders.
Examples 1. Treat cough with lung heat: ladybell 0.5 liang, decoct in water and swallow.
2. Treat chronic bronchitis, cough without easy phlegm, dry mouth: fourleaf ladybell root 9g, dwarf lilyturf 9g, fresh ural licorice 6g, fragrant landpick 9g. Decoct in water.
3. Treat deficiencies: ladybell 1 liang, 1 chick with intestines removed, put ladybell into the abdomen of chick, stew with marmite and eat.
