Latin name Cuscuta chinensis Lam.
Family & Genus Convolvulaceae, Cuscuta
Description Annual parasitic herbs. Stem climbing, filamentous, light yellow, plants attached to the host by haustorium to survive. Flowers bisexual, numerous, clustered, with very short stalks, calyx 5 lobed, nearly equilong with corolla, corolla 5 lobed, short campanulate, about 2mm long, stamens 5, styles 2, capsules spherical, slightly flat, various seed shapes, brown. Flowering: July to September, fruiting: August to October.
Distribution Growing on the fields, wasteland and in thickets. Distributed in most parts of China. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Guangdong, Sichuan and etc.
Part Used Medical part: seeds. Chinese name: Tusizi.
Harvest & Processing In July and September when seed become mature, harvested seeds with its host, sundried, threshed down seeds, removed foreign matters.
Chemistry Mainly contains resin glycoside and saccharides.
Pharmacology Hepatic-protective, non-specific-resistance strengthening.
Properties & Actions Pungent, sweet, neutral, non-toxic.Tonifying liver and kidney, benefiting essence and improving eyesight.
Indications & Usage Cold pain in the waist and knees, emissions, diabetes, urine dripping, blurred vision.Oral administration: decocting, 15-25g; or made as pills or powders. External application: stir-heated and powdered for application.
Examples 1. Tonifying kidney qi, invigorating the yang, assisting spirit, lightening waist and feet: China dodder 1 jin (wash clean, decoct in liquor, pestle into cake, and bake dry), aconite root (prepared) 4 liang. Grind together into powder, and prepare pills with liquor, as large as firmianae semen. Swallow 50 pills with liquor.
2. Treat lumbago: China dodder (immerse in liquor), euconmmia (remove peel, stir-fried, cut off the filament) of equal amounts. Grind into fine powder, and prepare pills with Chinese yam as large as firmianae semen. Take 50 pills each time with salty liquor or soup.
3. Treat waist and knee pain due to accumulation of pathogenic cold in males, or refractory numbness and weakness: Chinese dodder herb (washed) 1 liang, two-toothed achyranthes 1 liang. Immerse in liquor for 5 days, dry under the sun, grind into powder, add a little mellow wine into the formerly immersed liquor as paste, and prepare pills as large as firmianae semen. Swallow 29 pills with liquor on empty stomach.
