Description Perennial herb, up to 1 meter high. Sprout covered with light yellow soft hairs. Pinnately compound leaf, alternate; leaflet 2 pieces, changes a lot in size and shape, ovate to rhombic, 2.5-11cm long, 1-5cm wide, tip suddenly sharpen, basal part inclined wedge shaped, margin coarse; petiole short; tendril undeveloped and turns acicular; stipule narrowly rhombic, margin with sparse thick tooth; Raceme axillary; calyx inclined campanulate, calyx teeth 5. triangular, 3 tooth down side high, sparsely grown with short hairs; corolla red or purplish red, vexil panduriform, tip emarginate, about 15mm long, ala tip blunt, with ear and claw in lower part, about 13mm long, carina curving ovate, with ear and claw, equal to ala in length; stamens 10, diadelphous; ovary with stipe, hairless, upper half part of style with white soft hairs. Legume narrowly square, flat on both sides, hairless, 2.5-4cm long; Seeds oblate, dark brown. Flowering: June to August; fruiting: September.
Distribution Growing in ravines, on grasslands, forest margins or in sunward thickets. Distributed in Beijing, Northeast, North, Central, Northwest and Southwest China, etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Henan, Hebei, Guangxi and etc.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant. Chinese name: Waitoucai.
Harvest & Processing Collected in summer, washed, chopped into segments, and sun-dried.
Chemistry Fresh leaves mainly contain saponin, and phytolect, etc.
Pharmacology Diuretic and detoxifying.
Properties & Actions Sweet, neutral.Replenishing deficiency and regulating liver qi, detoxifying and disinhibiting urine.
Indications & Usage Consumptive disease, gastralgia, dizziness, furunculosis, puffiness.Oral administration: decocting, 9-30g. External application: appropriate amount, smashed for applying.
Examples 1. Overstrain impairment: pair vetch root 5 qian. Steam liquor 1 liang, take 3 times every day.
2. Dizziness: tender leaves of pair vetch root 3 qian. Steam egg and eat.
