Description Evergreen woody climber, 10m long, whole plant with latex. Stem cylindrical, reddish brown, with lenticels; tender branch covered by yellow soft hairs, gradually hairless elderly. Leaf coriaceous or nearly coriaceous, opposite, elliptic or ovate elliptic or invert ovate, 2-10cm long, 1-4.5cm wide, apex sharp and pointed to gradually pointed or blunt, sometimes slightly depressed or with small spurs, basal part gradually narrowed and blunt, leaf surface hairless, leaf dorsally covered by sparse short soft hairs, old branch gradually turning hairless; leaf surficial middle vein slightly depressed, lateral vein flat, leaf dorsal middle vein raised, lateral vein 6-12 in each side, flat or slightly raised; petiole short, covered by short soft hairs, old branch gradually turning hairless; glands in petiole and out of leaf axil drill shaped, about 1mm long. dichasium axillary or basidixed, several flowers making up a cone, flower equal to or longer than leaf; flower white, aromatic; calyx 5 deeply lobed, lobe linear lanceolate, apex reflexed, base with 10 scale like glands; bud apex blunt, corolla cylindrical, middle part expanding, corolla lobe 5, covering toward right; stamens 5, grown in the middle of corolla tube, abdomen adhered to stigma, anther arrow shaped, with ear in basal part, hidden in gorge; flower disc annularly 5 lobed, equal to ovary in length; ovary consisting of 2 pieces of distinct carpel, hairless, style cylindrical, stigma orbicularovate. Follicle dichotoma, hairless, linear lanceolate; seed plentiful, brown, linear, apex with white silky seed hairs. Flowering: March to July, fruiting: July to December.
Distribution Growing in mountains and plain, on streamsides, roadsides, forest margins or holt, often twining on trees or attaching on walls, and rocks. Distributed in East and South-central China, Hebei, Shaanxi, Taiwan and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Shandong, Fujian, Hubei and etc.
Part Used Medical part: vane with leaves. Chinese name: Luoshiteng.
Harvest & Processing Cut the vane in late autumn after 3-4 years of planting, cut into 25-30cm-long segments, wisped, and sun-dried.
Chemistry Vane contains arctiin, tracheloside, nortracheloside and matairesinoside, etc. Stem leaves contain alkaloids, like coronaridine, voacangine and apparicine, etc. Leaves also contain flavonoid compounds, like apigenin, apigenin-7-O-glucoside and apigenin-7-O-gentiobioside, etc.
Pharmacology Bacteriostatic, blood-vessel-expanding, and blood-pressure-lowering.
Properties & Actions Bitter, pungent, little cold.Freeing the network vessels for suppressing pains, cooling blood for clearing heat, removing toxin for detumescence.
Indications & Usage Rheumatic arthralgia, cold pain in the waist and knees, contracture of meridian and vessels, swelling pain in the throat, furunculosis and swelling, injuries caused by falls, traumatic hemorrhage.Oral administration: decocting, 6-15g, single use up to 30g; made as medicinal liquor, 30-60g; or made as pills or powders. External application: appropriate amount, powdered for applying or pounded to extract juice for unction.
Examples 1. Sciatica: star jasmine 60-90g. Decoct in water and swallow.
2. Arthritis: star jasmine, acanthopanax gracilistylus root peel 30g each, two-toothed achyranthes root 15g. Decoct in water and swallow, with liquor as the guider.
3. Pharyngitis, laryngeal obstruction, dyspnea, tree beard: starjasmine stem 2 liang. Cut into pieces, add into 1.5 big sheng water, cook until reduced to one big cup, and remove residues. Swallow gradually.
4. Cough with dyspnea: starjasmine stem and leaves 15g. Decoct in water and swallow.
