Description Perennial herb, 30-80cm high. Stem erect with four arris, unbranched or branches, inflorescence on upper part, branches diverging, green or lilaceous and finely pilose. Leaves opposite; leaf blades ovate or ovate-lanceolate, base cuneate to decurrent into petiole, apex acuminate, caudate acute, sparsely suborbicular, margin obtuse with teeth, both surfaces covered with sparse fine pappus. Racemose inflorescences spicate, terminal or axillary, puberulent or pubescent; small flowers numerous; bract and bracteoles subulate; calyx cylindrical, 5 arris, upper lip with 3 teeth and awn-like hook, 2 teeth of lower lip shorter, not awned; corolla lilaceous or white and lip-shaped, upper lip 3-lobed, lower lip 2-lobed; stamen 4, didynamous; style 1, stigma 2 lobed. Achene ptosis, rod-shaped, wrapped in persistent calyx. Flowering: June to October, fruiting: August to December.
Distribution Growing in forests or dank places of forest edge at altitude 380-2,800m. Distributed in Northeast and North China and the Yangtze River basin. Also distributed in Russia, North Korea, Japan, Vietnam, India and etc.
Part Used Medical part: entire plant with roots. Chinese name: Nianrenqun.
Harvest & Processing Excavated from July and August, sun-dried or air-dried.
Chemistry Root contains phrymarolin I, II, and leptostachyol acetate.
Properties & Actions Harsh, cool.Clearing heat, inducing urination, activating blood and dispersing swelling.
Indications & Usage Scabies, impetigo, eczema, injuries from falls, fractures.External application: appropriate amount, triturated for application or powdered for application.
