Description |
Woody vine, up to 7m. young branches purple-brown or black-brown, glabrous or with short villus when very young; simple leaves alternate; petioles slender, purple-brown, 2-5cm long, glabrous or scattered short villus; leaves membranous or thin papery, partial leaves with large white or pale red spots on its apex, sometimes downward, extend to the middle lower part, ovate or oblong-ovate, 6-15cm long, 3-12cm wide, apex acuminate, base cordate, rare nearly truncate, usually asymmetrical, margin with seta-shaped thin serrations, glabrous both sides or sparsely setaceous above or pubescent below along veins, especially most at the lower part of the middle vein, lateral veins 6-8 pairs. Cyme axillary, usually with 1-3 flowers; flowers unisexual, dioecious or unisexual flowers together with bisexual flowers; bracts small, subulate; calyx 5, glabrous, base some are fused; petals 5, rare 4 or 6-7, white or pale red, oblong, apex round, base cuneate; stamens numerous, anthers yellow, nearly arrow-shaped; ovary glabrous, style filamentous, numerous. Berry spherical or oblong-ovate, 2-2.5cm in diameter, glabrous, without spots. Flowering: May to June; fruiting: August to September. |

Growing in mountain forests at altitude 1,600-3,500m or thickets. Distributed in Northeast China, Hebei, Shaanxi, Jiangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Northeast China, Hebei, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan. |
