Description Machaka or dungarunga, 2-4m tall. Branchlet cylindrical, covered by yellow short soft hairs or soft hairs before maturity. Single leaf, opposite; petiole 2-8mm long, covered by short soft hairs; lamina papery or thinly leathery, ovate to lanceolate, or nearly round, 2-7cm long, 1-3cm wide, tip sharp and pointed, short and pointed to gradually pointed, or blunt and slightly depressed, basal part broad wedge shaped or nearly round, or wedge shaped, upper surface deep green, covered by short soft hairs along the middle vein. Panicle basidixed or axillary, tower shaped, rachis covered by dense light yellow short soft hairs or soft hairs or even nearly hairless; peduncle 1-3mmm long, covered by short soft hairs or hairless; calyx 1-1.5mm long, tip truncate or shallowly undate; corolla tube about 1.5-2.5mm long, lobe long circular elliptic or ovate elliptic; filament nearly equal to or longer than lobe, anther long circular, about 1mm long. Fruit nearly spherical, 5-8mm in diameter. Flowering: March to June, fruiting: September to December.
Distribution Growing in thin forests or jungle. Distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and etc.
Part Used Medical part: bark and branches and leaves. Chinese name: Xiaolashu.
Harvest & Processing Collected bark and branch leaves in summer and autumn, used fresh or sundried.
Pharmacology Bacteriostatic.
Properties & Actions Bitter, cool.Clearing heat for inducing diuresis, removing toxin for detumescence.
Indications & Usage Cold and pyrexia, coughing with lung heat, swelling pain in the throat, mouth and tongue ulcers, jaundice with damp-heat pathogen, dysentery, anthracia and sores, eczema, injuries from falls, scalding injuries.Oral administration: decocting, 10-15g. Fresh products double in amount. External application: appropriate amount, decocted for rinsing; or prepared ointment; smashed or extracted juice for erasing.
Examples Icteric hepatitis: fresh branches and leaves of Chinese privet 15-30g. Decoct in water and swallow.
