Description Annual herb height up to 100cm. The whole plant covered with glandular hair, sticky. Stem erect or bent and then rises, divides into many branches. Leaves opposite; having petioles with narrow wings, petiole length 5-12mm; leaf blade long-triangular ovate, length 1-7cm. Lower part pinnatisect, gradually parted to lobed upwards, lobe long ovate, margin serrulate. Flower solitary at leaf axils, sparsely flowered; pedicel 2-7mm long; calyx campanulate, with 5 clefts, fruiting extended, lobe long ovate, upper part pinnately tooth-cleft, margin fine teeth; Corolla purplish red or light purplish red, cylindrical, 1.5-2cm long, 2 lip-shaped, pilose outside, lobes of upper lip triangular-ovate, 2 lobed, lobe edge revolute, lower lip two large horizontal folds, white villous above; stamens 4, base of anther chamber extended into short awn. Capsule ovate conical, ca. 1cm long, loculicidal 2 clefts. Seed ovoid, applanatus, ca. 1.2mm long. Flowering: July to August; fruiting: August to October.
Distribution Growing on hill-slopes, sandy lands and grasslands. Distributed in all parts of China except Xinjiang and Qinghai.
Part Used Medical part: roots and whole plant. Chinese name: Songhao.
Harvest & Processing Harvested in summer and autumn, used fresh or sundried.
Chemistry Aboveground parts contain phtheirospermo-side, acteoside, martynoside, aucubin, genipo-sidic acid and plantarenaloside, etc.
Properties & Actions Pungent, cool.Clearing heat for draining dampness and detoxifying.
Indications & Usage Jaundice, edema, wind-heat type common cold, sore mouth, rhinitis, ulcers, furuncles and swelling toxicity.Oral administration: decocting, 15-30g. External application: appropriate amount, decocted for washing; or powdered for applying.
Examples 1. Edema: Japanese phtheirospermum 30g, stew in water, and drink before sleeping, stew in water, fumigate and wash Your whole body.
2. Wind-heat type common cold: Japanese phtheirospermum 15g, fresh ginger 3 pieces. Stew in water and swallow.
