Description Perennial herb, stem 60-200cm tall, blunt, 4 angled, with flattened sparse long hard hairs, upper part comparatively dense. Leaf thinly papery, ovate, 5-11cm long, 1.5-9cm wide, leaves grown in upper part and branches comparatively small, tip slightly blunt, basal part heart shaped or round, margin sinuate; both surfaces covered by sparse soft hairs, particularly plentiful on the veins; petiole 0.5-6cm long. Flower with short stipe, 2-6 flowers arranged in to a axillary cyme, sometimes solitary; calyx enlarged after blooming period, covered by sparse long hairs and yellow glanular dots, with 10 veins. Corolla bluish purple, 6-8cm long, entablature bilabiate, upper lib 2 circularly lobed, lobe outward reflexed, lower lip 3 lobed, middle lobe sunken, being cystic. Nutlet long circular, only 2 matured, flat, dark brown, with thin spots, basal part with 2 attachment regions.
Distribution Originally growing in tropical America, now widely in tropical areas all over the world. Distributed in Guangdong, Hainan, Hong Kong, Guangxi, Fujian and Taiwan. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Taiwan.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant. Chinese name: Shanxiang.
Harvest & Processing Collected in summer and dried in the shade or used fresh.
Chemistry Fruits contain 24% oil, 22% protein, reflective index of oil is 1. 4696, saponification value 188 and iodine value 146. Fatty acid: saturated acid 12, oleic acid 6, linoleic acid 77 and conjugated trienoic fatty acids 0.2.
Properties & Actions Pungent, bitter, neutral.Dispelling pathogenic wind and disinhibiting dampness, promoting qi-flowing and dispersing stasis.
Indications & Usage Used for headaches caused by colds, enteritis, dysentery, abdominal distention, Externally used for swelling pains from falls, traumatic hemorrhage, anthracia and sores, bites by snakes and insects, eczema, dermatitis.Use 15-25g. External application: appropriate amount, fresh products smashed for applying or decocted for washing.
Examples Pleuritis, lung dropsy: Hyptis 3-4 qian. Pig lung, gavage and compress, and wash for many times, then it can be decocted.
