Description Liana, stem 60-9cm long, whole plant hairless. Stem tendrils slim, procumbent and recumbent, stem sections in contact with soil generate adventitious root, annual seeding with 30-60 branches of stem, biennial seeding with more than 100 branches. Leaf opposite, ovale to ovate, flower solitary in leaf axil, calyx with 5 lobes, narrow ovoid lanceolate; corolla bluish purple, sympetaly funnel shaped, upper part of corolla tube densely grown with white hairs, laryngeal part of corolla with scale attachment; stamens 5, grown in the middle of corolla tube; with filaments hidden inside, flat, anther ovale with 2 ventricles; flower disc consists of 2 pieces of ligule, alternate with carpel. Ovary superior, style 1, stigma with hair. Lettuce fruit, seed blackish brown.
Distribution Originating from coastal areas, India and tropical America. Distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Taiwan and etc. Now cultivated in Jiangsu.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant. Chinese name: Xiaomanchangchunhua.
Harvest & Processing Annual herb: harvested once from late Oct-Nov in the planting year. Biennial herb: can be harvested twice per year, individually from May to June of the first planting year, and from late Oct to late Nov of the second planting year. Collected on sunny days, cut the whole plant about 5cm above the ground. Whole plant sundried, baked to dry in 80-90℃ on cloudy or rainy days.
Chemistry Contains over 70 kinds of alkaloids, mainly vinblastine, leurocristine, ajmalicine, lochneridine, lochnericine and carharosinetc.
Pharmacology Anti-tumors, antihypertensive, blood-sugar-lowering and diuretic, etc., according to abroad introduction: hemostatic for uterus hemorrhage; roots used for abortion.
Properties & Actions Little bitter, cool, entering lung and kidney.Cooling blood for depressurization and calming mental state.
Indications & Usage Used for hypertension, scalding and burns, malignant lymphoma, choriocarcinoma, monocytic leukemia.
