Description Shrub, 1-3m high. No dust-coloured, stellate pilose on branchlets, inferior surface of leaf, petiole and pedicel. Stems erect, branched, stout, short spines dispersedly grown on branches and petioles. Leaf solitary or twin; petiole length 2-4cm; leaf blade ovate to elliptic, long 6-12cm, 4-9cm wide, apex pointed, base cordate or cuneate, both sides unequal, entire or lobed. Corymb extra-axillary, inflorescences ca. 4cm long; peduncles 1-1.5cm long, with 1 thin straight spine or absent; calyx cupular, outside stellate hairy and glandular hair, apex 5 lobed, lobes ovate-oblong; corolla radialis-shaped, color insufficient, 5 lobed, lobes ovate-lanceolate; stamens 5, inserted at corolla throat, anthers ca. 7mm long; ovary 2 chambers, stigma truncate. Berry spheroid, yellow, glabrous, diameter 1-1.5cm; seed disk, diameter 1.5-2mm. Flowering and fruiting: throughout the year.
Distribution Growing in humid places of tropical regions such as roadsides, wastelands, ravine and near villages. Originating in Caribbean Area of Americas. Now distributed in Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan.
Part Used Medical part: roots and old stem. Chinese name: Shuiqie.
Harvest & Processing Collected throughout the year, well washed, sliced, used fresh or sundried.
Chemistry Root contains neolchlorogenin and jurubine. Stem contains solasodine. Fruit contains torvogenin, chloro-genin [1] and sisalagenone. Leaf contains 2, 3,4-trimethyltria-contane.
Properties & Actions Taste pungent, neutral in nature ; mild-toxic.Activating blood, dispersing swelling and relieving pain.
Indications & Usage Gastralgia, cholera, menostasia, stasis and swelling pain from falls, psoatic strain, anthracia, furunculosis.Oral administration: decocting, 9-15g. External application: appropriate amount, triturated for application.
Examples Gastric lavage, purgation: or use green bean coat, weeping forsythia, ural licorice, decoct in water and swallow; or take fresh asiatic pennywort 0.5 jin, pestle to collect juice, and swallow.
