Description Annual herbs, 30-100cm tall. Whole plant almost glabrous. Stem erect, cylindrical, base woody, upper part forked branched, green, surface with irregular wrinkles, shoots four prism-shaped, purplish, pubescent. Leaves alternate, upper leaves nearly opposite; petioles 2-5cm long; leaves broad oval, long oval or cordate, 5-20cm long, 4-15cm wide, apex acuminate or acute, base asymmetrical, margin with irregular short teeth, or entire and wavy, both sides glabrous or sparsely hairy, veins on back side of leaves bulged. Flowers solitary between branches or axils; pedicels about 1cm long, erect or ramp-up, white pubescent; calyx tubular, 4-6cm long, 1-1.5cm in diameter, light yellow green, apex 5 lobed, lobes triangular, neat or irregular, apex acute, calyx tubes behind flowers cracked and fallen off nearly from the base, base of left calyx tubes persistent, increased and discoidal when fruiting, 2.5-3cm in diameter, margin unfolded; corolla tube funnel-shaped, 14-20cm long, entablature 5-7cm in diameter, diameters of lower part gradually smaller, expanded upward and trumpet-shaped, white, with 5 edges, lobes 5, lobes 5, triangular, apex long acute; stamens 5, borne in corolla tubes, anthers linear, flat, borne at the base; pistil 1, ovary bead-shaped, 2 chambers, with sparse short bristle, ovules numerous, style filamentous, 11-16cm long, stigma peltate. Capsules spherical or flat spherical, about 3cm in diameter, outside with sparse short spines, light brown when mature, irregularly 4 lobed. Seeds numerous, flat, slightly triangular, brown when mature. Flowering: March to November, fruiting: April to November.
Distribution Growing in mountain slopes, grasslands, or near house. Originally cultivated, now also wildly growing in sandy places along village roadsides. Distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan. Cultivated in Shanghai and Nanjing and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Jiangsu, Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian and etc.
Part Used Medical part: flowers. Chinese name: Yangjinhua.
Harvest & Processing In full bloom from the late July to late August, collected at 4-5 a.m. and dried in 50℃-60℃ for 4-6 hours.
Chemistry Flower contains tropane alkaloids 0.12%-0.82%, including hyoscine (scopola-mine) 0.11%-0.15%, hyoscyamine 0.01%-0.37, and atropine.
Pharmacology Having effect on central nervous system, cyclic system, respiratory system and smooth muscle organs.
Properties & Actions Taste pungent, warm in nature, toxic.Checking cough, anesthesia to alleviate pain, relieving spasm and twitching.
Indications & Usage Dyspnea and cough, cold pain in the gastric cavity and abdomen, rheumatic arthralgia, epilepsy, infantile convulsions, anesthesia prior to surgery.Oral administration: decocting, 0.3-0.5g, better made as pills or powders. If made as cigarette for smoking, not more than 0.5g per day. External application: appropriate amount, prepared decoction for washing; or powdered for application.
Examples 1. Treat asthma: Jimson weed flower 1.5 liang, potassium nitrate 1 qian, bulbus fritilariae 1 liang, rhizoma pinelliae 8 qian, herba lycopi 6 qian, coltsfoot 5 qian. Grind into fine powder, add dried ginger 1 jin, pestle collect juice, mix with drug powder evenly, store in a tea cup and seal closely, steam above water for 1 hour and pick out, mix with prepared tobacco filaments evenly, put to a ventilated place, blow to 70-80% dryness (not too dry, or it will become brittle), store in cigarettes can for later use. Smoke with cigarette holder or hookah, or usual smoking measures.
2. Treat chronic infantile convulsion: Jimson weed flower 7, rhizoma gastrodiae 2.5 qian, scorpion (stir-fried) 10, diverseleaf southstar (prepared), cinnabar, boswellin 2.5 qian each. Grind into a powder. Swallow 0.5 qian with mint decoction.
