Description Perennial herb, 30-60cm high. Rhizome transversely growing, terete more or less, diameter 6-10mm, sometimes with inflated nodules. Above the middle of the stem with coarse appressed hair. Leaves alternate, 4-9; petiole 3-15mm long; leaf blade papyraceous, ovate-elliptic, oval or oblong, 6-13cm long, 3-7cm wide, apex nearly short and acuminate, base rounded, both sides sparsely covered by coarse hair or nearly glabrous. Panicle 3-6cm long, with thick and short hair; flowers solitary, peduncle 2-6mm long, tepals 6, separated or only base slightly connate, oblong or oblong-obovate, ca. 3mm long, white; stamens 6, base of filaments adnate to tepals, anthers small; ovary 3 chambers, style nearly equal in length to ovary, stigma almost not cleft. Berry subglobose, diameter 5-6mm, red when ripe, with 1-2 seeds. Flowering: May to June, fruiting: August to September.
Distribution Growing in forest dank places or stone crevices. Distributed in Northeast China, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Taiwan, Henan, Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou.
Part Used Medical part: rhizome and roots. Chinese name: Luyao.
Harvest & Processing Excavated in spring and autumn, well washed, used fresh or sundried.
Chemistry Contains isorhamnetin-3-O-galactoside.
Properties & Actions Sweet bitter, warm.Tonifying kidney, strengthening yang, activating blood, dissipating stasis, removing wind and relieving pain.
Indications & Usage Impotence due to deficiency of the kidney, irregular menstrual periods, hemicrania and headache, rheumatic arthralgia, anthracia and sores, injuries from falls.Oral administration: decocting, 6-15g; or made as medicinal liquor. External application: appropriate amount, triturated for application; or heated and iron the affected part.
Examples Treat headache, hemicrania: piantouqi, angelica, szechwan lovage rhizome, skunk bugbane, weeping forsythia 2 qian each. Decoct in water, and swallow after meals.
