Description Perennial herb. Numerous fibrous roots, clusters. Stems erect, height up to 20-80cm, together with petiole outstretched hispid, upper branched, densely outspreaded yellowish white hispid. Basal leaves ternately compound leaves, length 3-14cm, width 3.8-17cm, central lobule with long petiole, terminal leaflets rhombic ovate or broadly ovate, 3 parted, margin with dense serrature, lateral leaflets obliquely broadly ovate, ranging from 2 divided or 2 parted, both sides sparsely strigose, petiole length 4.5-20cm leaves of upper stem smaller, 3 divided, with short stalk or sessile. Inflorescences terminal, flowers 4-10, sparsely exist; flowers bisexual; diameter 1-1.2cm; pedicels length 2-5cm, densely outspread yellowish white hispid; receptacle strigose; sepals 5, reflexed, narrowly ovate, 3-4mm long; petals 5, narrowly elliptic or obovate, 4-7.5mm long; stamens numerous; style straight or slightly curved, shorter than ovary by about 3 times. Aggregate fruit globose; achenes flat, obliquely obovoid, ca. 2.5-3mm long, edge with about 0.3mm wide edge wing, glabrous, with narrow edge; persistent style triangular, 1mm long, straight or slightly curved. Flowering, fruiting: April to July.
Distribution Growing on streamsides, paddy sides, grassy slopes or forest margins. Distributed in Henan, South Anhui, South Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Taiwan, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Guangxi, Guangzhou, East Yunnan, Sichuan and Shaanxi. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangsu and etc.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant. Chinese name: Zikoucao.
Harvest & Processing Collected whole plant in late spring and early summer, washed, sun-dried or used fresh.
Chemistry Contains protoanemonine, and flavonoid compounds: phenols and organic acid, etc.
Properties & Actions Taste little bitter, pungent, warm in nature, toxic.Removing liver fire for improving eyesight, removing dampness for detoxifying and preventing malaria attack.
Indications & Usage Used for cloudiness of vision, conjunctival congestion, jaundice, anthracia, pain of rheumatic joints, malaria.External application: appropriate amount, smashed for applying and foaming, squeezing noses or pounded to extract juice for applying.
Examples 1. Remove pseudomembrane for eye disease: or chicken pox, copper coin 1, place onto pulse, pestle and apply to the coin hole, the pseudomembrane will be dissipated, and it is good even with blisters.
2. Ophthalmitis due to wind heat: remove corneal opacity, fill canton buttercup herb into a bag, decoct in water and administer orally, or stew with pork, beef liver, and cook with honey date.
3. Jaundice: take canton buttercup herb, pestle and apply onto wrist pulse, cut to let out yellow fluid after blisters are induced.
