Description Perennial herb, up to 70cm high. Lower part of stem hairless or nearly hairless, upper part covered with glandular hairs or soft hairs. Leaf ovate or ovate long elliptic, 3-10cm long, 1.5-4.5cm wide, tip pointed or short and gradually pointed, basal part round, broad wedge shaped or wedge shaped, bicrenate, both sides nearly hairless or covered with extremely thin tiny soft hairs; petiole 1-3cm long, nearly hairless. Pseudo-spike basidixed and axillary, the basidixed mostly branches from basal part, densely covered with glandular hairs; verticillaster with 2 flowers, gathered into a spike, bract entire, lanceolate; peduncle 1-2mmm long, densely covered with glandular long soft hairs; calyx campanulate, 3 teeth in upper lip ovate triangular, 2 teeth in lower lip triangular; corolla white, light red or light purple, tube longer than 1/3 of the whole length of corolla, entablature single lip shaped, middle lobe biggest, perfectly round, lateral lobe ovate triangular; pistil stretches out, flower disc discoid, shallowly 4 lobed; tip of style 2 lobed, ovary apex covered with bullate hairs. Netlet flatly spherical, 1.3mm long, yellowish brown. Flowering: July to September in Yangtze River valley, June to November in Guangdong and southern Yunnan.
Distribution Growing in forests. Distributed in South Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Southwest Sichuan, Southeast Tibet and Southeast Henan. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and etc.
Part Used Medical part: entire plant. Chinese name: Shanhuoxiang.
Harvest & Processing Collected from July and August, well washed, used fresh or sundried.
Chemistry Entire plant contains teucivin, phenois, amino acid, organic acid and saccharide, etc.
Properties & Actions Taste pungent, bitter, cool in nature.Cooling blood, arresting bleeding, detoxifying and dissipating stasis.
Indications & Usage Used for hemoptysis, hematemesis, non-traumatic hemorrhage, pulmonary abscess, injuries caused by falls, superficial infections, toxic swelling, hemorrhoids and swelling pain, dermatitis rhus, beriberi, bites by mad dogs, venomous snake bites.Oral administration: decocting, 15-30g, double dose for fresh use. Or extracted juice; or powdered. External application: appropriate amount, triturated for application; or prepared decoction for fumigating and washing.
Examples 1. Pulmonary abscess, coughing up blood, hematemesis, non-traumatic hemorrhage: fresh viscid germander herb 30-60g, crystal sugar 30g. Decoct in water and swallow.
2. Lung tuberculosis, hemorrhage due to pulmonary cavity: viscid germander herb, four-o'clock root 30g each. Decoct in water, add honey and eat.
