Description Dwarf shrubs, highest erect stem up to 15cm. Rhizomes creeper type, woody; young branches densely ferruginous curly long pubescence, then glabrous. Leaves alternate or clustered on top of stem, leaves firm papery, obovoid or oblong-lanceolate, 7-14cm long, 3-4(-5)cm wide, margin with glands, both sides green or dark purple-red, ferruginous or purple-red coarse appressed hairs, base tubercle-like bulging, with glands, back prominent, lateral veins 6-8 pairs; petioles 5-15mm long or nearly sessile, with hairs. Umbels, single, borne at top of axillary flowering branches, flowering branches 1-2(3), 3-9cm long, with 10 flowers; peduncles 4-8mm long, with hairs; flowers 5-7mm long, calyx lanceolate or narrowly oblong-lanceolate, with glands; petals pink, ovate; anthers lanceolate, back usually with glands; ovary spherical. Fruits diameter ca. 6mm, spherical, bright red, slightly with glands. Flowering: June to July, Fruiting: December to January(-June) of the following year.
Distribution Growing in valley thick forests and dank places. Distributed in Southeast Zhejiang, Fujian, South Jiangxi, South Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and South-central Sichuan. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Sichuan, Hubei, Guangdong and etc.
Part Used Medical part: entire plant. Chinese name: Hongmaozoumatai.
Harvest & Processing Collected in summer and autumn, well washed, used fresh or sun-dried.
Properties & Actions Taste bitter, pungent, and cool in nature.Removing wind, inducing urination, clearing heat, detoxifying, activating blood circulation and arresting pain.
Indications & Usage Used for rheumatic arthralgia, jaundice, dysentery, coughing up blood, hematemesis, hemafecia, menostasia, lochia post partum, injuries from falls, mammary abscess, furunculosis.Internal: decocting, 9-15g; or made as medicinal liquor. External: appropriate amount, powdered for application.
Examples Cold and dampness, joint pain: mamillate ardisia herb 30g, benincasae semen 30g, Chinese clematis root 30g, Japanese raisintree seed 15g, oblongleaf kadsura stem 15g, os macacae 30g, nettle 9g, red achyranthis radix 12g. Infuse with alcohol and drink. Half a cup at night each day.
