朱自清 (1898 - 1948)

原名自華,字佩弦。原籍浙江紹興,生於江蘇東海,後定居揚州。1916年考入北京大學哲學系。1919年開始發表新詩。翌年大學畢業,在杭州、溫州等地中學任教。1922年與俞平伯等創辦我國最早的新詩刊物─《詩》。1925年任清華大學中文系教授,創作由新詩改為散文,同時開始研究古典文學。1931年曾一度休假,遊學歐洲,翌年七月返國。回國後,先後在清華大學、西南聯大任教。抗戰勝利後,積極參加愛國民主運動,為民主鬥士。著有詩集《雪朝》、詩文集《蹤跡》,散文集《背影》、《歐遊雜記》等。1948年,因胃潰瘍病逝於北平醫院,享年50歲。


Zhu Ziqing (1898 - 1948)

Originally named Zhu Zihua; also named Pei Xian. Ancestral home in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province; born in Donghai, Jiangsu province, later moving to settle in Yangzhou. In 1916, Zhu Ziqing was admitted into the Department of Philosophy of Peking University. He started publishing new poetry in 1919. He graduated the following year and started teaching in high schools in areas including Hangzhou and Wenzhou. In 1922, in collaboration with Yu Pingbo and others, Zhu launched the first “new poetry” publication in China, Poetry. In 1925, he joined Tsinghua University as professor of Department of Chinese and shifted his focus from new poetry to prose. At the same time, he started studying classical literature. In 1931, he took a sabbatical and went on a study tour to Europe, returning to China in July of the following year. After his return, he taught in Tsinghua University, then at the Southwest Associated University. After the triumph of the War of Resistance against Japan, he became an active participant in the national democratic movement, as a “fighter for democracy”. His works include a collection of poetry called A Snowy Morning, a collection of poetry and essays called Traces and collections of essays including The View from the Rear, and European Sketches. On August 12, 1948, Zhu died of gastric disease in Beijing at the age of 50.
