林海音 (1918 - 2001)

原名林含英,小名英子。原籍臺灣省苗栗縣,但生於日本大版。當時臺灣被日本侵佔,家庭遷居北京,小英子即在北京長大。林海音曾先後就讀北京城南廠甸小學、北京新聞專科學校。16歲考入北平新聞專科學校半工半讀,並結識夏承楹,21歲時與夏結婚。1948年,林海音返回台灣與丈夫一起擔任編輯。1960年,出版小說集《城南舊事》。該小說後被改編成電影、圖畫繪本,及被翻譯成多種語言版本。林海音曾創辦純文學月刊,1968年,成立純文學出版社,為文壇培育了無數作家。

林海音的創作非常豐富,包括散文集《兩地》、《作客美國》、《芸窗夜讀》、《剪影話文壇》、《一家之主》、《家住書坊邊》;散文小說合集《冬青樹》;短篇小說集《燭心》、《婚姻的故事》、《城南舊事》、《綠藻與鹹蛋》;長篇小說《春風》、《曉雲》、《孟珠的旅程》,廣播劇集《薇薇的周記》、《林海音自選集》、《林海音童話集》等。2001年12月1日,因中風、肺炎、敗血症等病併發,在臺北振興醫院不治去世,享年83歲。


Lin Haiyin (1918 - 2001)

Originally named Lin Hanyin; in childhood named Yingzi. Ancestral home in Miaoli, Taiwan province; born in Osaka, Japan. Her family moved to Beijing when Taiwan was invaded by Japan, and so Yingzi grew up in Beijing.

Lin studied in Peking City Nan Changdian Primary School and Peking College on News. At 16, she was admitted into the World News School in Beijing, studying and working at the same time. She met Xia Chengying there, and they got married when she was 21. In 1948, the couple went back to Taiwan, both taking up work as editors. In 1960, she published a collection of short stories My Life in the South of Beijing. The work was later adapted for film and picture story book, and was translated into a variety of languages. In 1967 Lin launched the monthly Belles-Lettres, and in 1968 she founded the Belles-Lettres Press, helping a large number of budding writers develop promising literary careers.

Lin was a prolific writer. Her essay collections include Two Places, A Visitor in the United States, Night Reading by the Rue Windows, A Silhouette of the Literary Circle, Master of the Family, and I Live beside a Bookstore; collections of essays and fiction include The Evergreen; collections of short fiction include Core of the Candle, The Story of Marriage, My Life in the South of Beijing, and Green Algae and Salted Eggs; novels include Spring Breeze, Clouds of Dawn, and Meng Zhu's Journey; radio plays include Wei-wei's Weekly Diary, Selections by Lin Haiyin, and Fairytales by Lin Haiyin. On December 1, 2001, Lin died in Taipei Cheng Hsin Hospital of complications of stroke, pneumonia and blood-poisoning at the age of 83.
