Description Perennial herbaceous liane. Roots slender, cylindrical. Stem slender, with a number of longitudinal grooves, densely grey long woolly. Leaves alternate, petioles 1.5-4cm long, leaves ovate or ovate-cordate, 3-10cm long, 3-7.5cm wide, apex acute or obtuse, base cordate, margin entire, densely woolly on both sides, especially dense and thick below. Flowers solitary at axil, pedicels 2-4cm long, erect or downwards bent near top; bract 1, ovate, ca. 5mm long; perianth bent, upper pipe-shaped, inside yellow, central purple; stamens 6, anther pairs adnate to gynostemium, near base; pistils with inferior ovary, cylindrical, densely white long woolly, 6 chambers, style apex 6 lobed, gynostemium near base; ovary column shaped like ballpoint pen and densely white long woolly; apex of gynostemium lobes obtuse, margin downwards expanded with papillae. Capsules elliptic-obovoid, with 6 sinuate or wavy edges and wings, hair usually falling, expanded from apex to lower part crack into 6 upon maturation. Seeds flat. Flowering: June to August. Fruiting: September to October.
Distribution Growing on grassy hill-slopes, ditch-sides and roadsides. Can be cultivated. Distributed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei and etc. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Anhui, Jiangsu, Hunan, Jiangxi and etc.
Part Used Medical part: entire plant. Chinese name: Xungufeng.
Harvest & Processing Collected before flowering in May, excavated out with root, removed foreign matters, well washed, cut into segments and sun-dried.
Chemistry Roots and stems contain aristolochic acid A, and anistolactone.
Pharmacology Arthritis-preventing and anti-tumor.
Properties & Actions Pungent, bitter, neutral.Removing wind and damp, activating circulation, smoothing meridian and relieving pain.
Indications & Usage Used for pain of rheumatic joints, stomachache, malaria, anthracia.Internal: decocting, 9-15d; or made as medicinal liquor. Not use in case of deficiency of yin.
Examples 1. Rheumatic arthralgia: whole herb of dutchmanspipe 15g, acanthopanax gracilistylus root 30g, garden burnet 15g. alcohol and water of equal volume, decoct thickly and swallow.
2. Malaria: root of dutchmanspipe, cut into pieces and put into a bowl, add a little water, place onto rice and steam juice, eat with residues in 3 times. Eat for every 4 hours. The last time is 2 hours before malaria.
