Description Perennial herbaceous plant, up to, 1-2m tall. Rhizome stout and spindle-like, skin purple-red when fresh. Stem erect, ribbed and glabrous. Leaves odd-pinnate compound and alternate; radicicolous leaf bigger than the cauline leaf, with long petiole; cauline leaf nearly sessile, with semi-round stipules-surrounded by a trianglar-toothed margin; leaflets 5-19, long-ovate or oblong, 2-6cm long, 1-3cm wide, apex acute or obtuse, base nearly cordate or nearly truncate, margin round, shape serrated and glabrous. Flowers small, dense to obovate, short and cylindrical or nearly spherical spikes, sparse at the top of the stem; with bractlets; calyx tube larynx is constricted, lobes 4, petal-like, purple-red, oval or ovate, base with hair; no petals; stamens 4, nearly as long as calyx cleft; pistil superior ovary, ovate with hair, style slender, stigma papillary. Achenes are ovate, ca. 3mm long, brown, with fine hair and vertical edges, concealed in persistent calyx. Seed 1. Flowering: July to October, fruiting: September to November.
Distribution Growing on slopes, thickets or bushes in the wilderness at altitude 30-3,000m. Can be cultivated. Distributed in most parts of China. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Hebei, Jiangsu and etc.
Part Used Medical part: roots. Chinese name: Diyu.
Harvest & Processing Excavated before sprout in spring or after wilt in autumn, removed fibrous root, washed, dried, or cut into thick slices when fresh and then dried.
Chemistry Contains tannin (8-15%) and triterpenoid saponins (e.g. sanguisorbin).
Pharmacology Hemostasis, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing accelerating, antibacterial and antiemetic.
Properties & Actions Bitter, sour, astringe, little cold. Bitter, sour, harsh, little cold.Clearing heat to cool the blood, stopping bleeding and detoxifying.
Indications & Usage Used for hemafecia, hemorrhoid hemorrhage, hematodiarrhoea, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, burns caused by hot liquids or fires, anthracia and sores.Oral administration: decocting, 6-15g, fresh products extracted juice, 30-90g; or made as pills or powders. External application: appropriate amount, decocted for washing, or pounded to extract juice for unction, or powdered for dusting. Not use in those with hemorrhage due to deficient-cold. Use with caution in cases of blood deficiency and stasis.
Examples 1. Eczema: garden burnet 30g, add 2 bowls of water, decoct to half a bowl, dampen with gauze dipped with decoction.
2. Snake toxin: garden burnet root, pestle to collect juice, drink, and apply onto the lesions.
