MR LOUIS KOO
Ambassador of GUFA
It is my privilege to be here to honour all of you at this very special
ceremony today. The launch of the Global University Film Awards (GUFA)
by Academy of Film of HKBU School of Communication is to recognise
globally the excellence of film productions by university students from
across the world. It is built on the success of the Global Chinese
Universities Student Film and Television Festival (GCU) which was
initiated by the Academy of Film. GUFA offers a global platform for
showcasing talents, exchanging ideas and fostering network.
It is also a notable day for the Hong Kong Baptist University which
prides itself above all else for adopting a holistic approach to education.
Its commitment to unlocking students' creativity, equipping them with
the knowledge and nurturing them with desired attributes necessary in
today's globalised world has earned our greatest respect.
The School of Communication of HKBU has nurtured over 12000
graduates since its establishment in 1968. The Film School is not a
passive learning experience, where professors funnel the secrets of
success into students' ears. It is a constant back and forth interaction
between the School's teaching and the students' own personal learning
and development. The School is ranked amongst the best and I truly
believe it's a place you'll be able to foster creative exchange and define
your own values. Being accompanied by people who share your passion
can be crucial validation for choosing a way of life, and a powerful
support network for the difficult journey ahead.
As Image Ambassador of GUFA, I am overwhelmed to see that the
Awards are widely supported and highly recognised by countries and
regions all over the world.

how to develop a festival strategy for your film. She will also provide insight into the

ABSTRACT
The future world has quietly come, but we have not yet
transformed into the next era. We are stil obsessed
with the limitations of the existing one, which will
create a break, and the changes in the world will
suddenly come and go beyond everything we know.
This rapid transformation produces enormous energy. It

that beyond thephysical world of infinite levels, there
is a spiritual world that cannot be covered by time and
space. It is the origin. The relationship between the
spiritual and physical worlds has become a new

The 1st Global University Film Awards
Building on 15 Years of Success of "Global Chinese Universities Student Film and Television Festival"
"Global University Film Awards (GUFA) is to recognize globally the excellence
of film productions by university students from across the world through
connecting the global film community and its audiences with outstanding
works and groundbreaking ideas.”"
Our Journey
GUFA builds on the success of the Global Chinese Universities Student Film and
Television Festival (GCU), which was initiated by the Academy of Filmn,School of
Communication of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2002. GCU is well recognized
as an iconic university film event that fosters a collaborative relationship among film
professionals, scholars and students in Hong Kong and those in the Greater China region.
Since 2002, GCU has steadily gained recognition from tertiary institutions from home
and abroad;
In 2016,GCU introduced the Foreign Category to its short film competition in view of
the Festival's growing popularity among the non-Chinese overseas film schools, and
foreign entries were invited to compete for three Foreign Awards;
Over the years, the Festival's star-studded award ceremonies have been broadcast
by major Hong Kong television networks, including TVB,ATV,RTHK and ViuTV,and
online platforms.
Extending the award coverage to the whole world, this year, GCU is reborn and rebrand
to become the Global University Film Awards amidst a growing international recognition
of the wealth of creative talents of university students from around the world in movie
production.GUFA is our collective global response to the call of the world's talented
young.
Mission
GUFA strives to encourage and recognize emerging filmmakers among university
students, foster creative exchange among film students around the world, and build
synergy between regional young talents and international creative industry. To achieve
the mission,GUFA offers a global platform, for showcasing talent, exchanging ideas and
fostering network.
Programme
Short Film Competition and Award Presentation Ceremony
GUFA will showcase student films from around the globe to display a panoramic view of
the inner world of the young filmmakers. It gives the aspiring filmmakers an international
stage for them to be heard and seen, thus motivating them to further explore their
potential. This year, the Short Film Competiton attracted a multitude of over 1800
submissions from film schools in 100 countries and regions.
The short film competition is open to international university students, and invites
submissions of five categories: Narrative, Narrative (Chinese),Documentary,
Animation and Experimental. All entries will be subjected to a competitive selection
process. The jury comprises world-class industry practitioners at home and abroad,
including Oscar and Emmy award-winning masters.
An Award Presentation Ceremony will take place on 9 November 2018 in Hong Kong to
celebrate the outstanding productions. Chief award-winning entries will receive cash prize
for each entry plus trophy.
Master Class
Renowned filmmakers and artists as well as distinguished scholars and professionals in
the creative media sector will be invited to hold master classes and exchange sessions.
