10 EDUCATIONAL GOAL OF THE BASIC STUDIES PROGRAMME The Basic Studies programme is built on the concept of educating "the whole man" in Christian perspective which gives purpose and value to the acquisition of knowledge, development of potentialities, self-actualization and strengthening of human relationships. It is a two-year integrated programme designed to provide a well-rounded basic education for secondary school leavers before they proceed to higher form of education, while taking into consideration the local A-level examination requirement for further studies at the first degree level. The Basic Studies programme (including the International Baccalaureate programme) aims at preparing the students for academic and professional competence and at the same time, assisting them in intellectual and character development. The College seeks to provide a learning environment in which each student may appreciate his identity, his relationship with others and his responsibilities to the community, through integrated activities in the total education process. THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES The academic programmes are geared to the individual needs of students. A broadly based education plus competent specialization in chosen disciplines is designed for this purpose. Courses offered at advanced or higher level are compatible with international standards of institutions of higher learning, and are designed to give students sufficient and practical training for entering professional careers or for further studies. The work of IB is coordinated by the International Baccalaureate Office (IBO), a foundation under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Government. The goal of the IB programme is to "educate the whole man" and to "learn how to learn". For language subjects, an oral examination is required to test students* ability of comprehension and expression. The students must also give evidence of their ability to carry out independent work by submitting an extended essay in one of the six subjects they have taken in the IBO examinations. The grading of this essay is based partly on the accompaning subject instructor's report. b) Internal assessment Internal assessment procedures are the same as that of the Basic Studies programme. However, internal results have a bearing on the student's final grade as that will be considered by the IBO. Evaluation on Theory of Knowledge and Creative Activities are monitored internally. 3.
