2 Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students Upholding the whole-person educational philosophy of HKBU, the Faculty of Social Sciences is convinced that, in addition to their traditional classroom education, students should be encouraged to seek experiential learning opportunities in order to broaden their horizons and extend their social circles. Experiential learning is an indispensable element of education nowadays. Hence, the Faculty, our Departments and Programmes organise various visits, study tours, exchange programmes and internship programmes for students, allowing them to think creatively and learn from practical experience.
3 Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students Taking advantage of the 3-3-4 curriculum reforms, the Faculty of Social Sciences further enhanced the whole-person education ethos and adopted an outcome-based approach by introducing the One Semester Off-Campus Programme (OSOC) under the new undergraduate curriculum in 2012. OSOC is an experiential programme providing inter-cultural, flexible and practical learning experiences for undergraduate students in the Faculty. It helps students develop their talents and competencies, and gain practical experience through exchange and internship programmes and community studies. Students choose the duration of their OSOC (from one semester to a yea。to fit into thei「study schedule and the location (local, overseas o「in mainland China). ⑥ Wide Range of Off-campus Opportunities
4 Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students Local Internship □ The Faculty established local internship programmes in 2005. The Social Sciences Internship (SSI) programme is a strategy in applied learning and a structured programme developed and supervised by the Faculty in collaboration with partner organisations, providing its undergraduate students various internship opportunities in different industries. Students can opt to work in one of the local partner organisations for at least one semester during the summer holidays or in term time. By participating in the internship, students are expected to enhance their personal growth, reach out to society, gain practical experience and equip themselves for the challenges to come. Mr. Kevin Chan (Year 2, China Studies - History Concentration) Intern, Hong Kong Council of Social Service I was excited to have a chance to work in a NGO concerned with government policies and social welfare development. This participation in policy research gave me an opportunity to learn how a social organisation carries out a professional study in order to provide the relevant authorities and the social services sector with comprehensive points of view and valuable suggestions. The internship required not only my research and writing skills but also good time management and collaboration with my colleagues. What's more, I was actively involved in extra tasks, as a kind of training. These were great opportunities for me to obtain real work experience that will be very helpful in my future career. Kevin is a sociable and pleasant young man. He is highly self-disciplined, as is reflected by his punctuality and the completion of his internship ahead of schedule. He was involved in our project on social economy and provided support in research and the collection of local statistics and information; he conducted interviews with an expert on the subject and also helped in the preparation of the booklet "Poverty in Focus". We believe the experience helped Kevin not only to gain knowledge of the subject but also to grow in confidence and to develop the soft skills needed for working in an office setting and collaborating with others.
5 Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students USA Disney Internship nn addition to its local internship programme, the Faculty has been serving the University and opening up an overseas work opportunity with the USA Disney Internship (introduced in 2007). Through working, living and learning at the successful Disney World theme park in Orlando, Florida, in the USA - for 8 to 12 weeks during the summer holidays - participants encounter a different culture in a way that enriches their off-campus learning experience and develops their global outlook. Miss Cherry Chau (Year 1F European Studies-French Stream) 周綵梨同學(歐洲研究-法文-年級) This was without doubt one of the most fruitful summers I have ever had! Working at Disney World is definitely a precious and magical experience, and is especially valuable for enhancing one's personal growth. Through interacting with visitors to Disney world and staff members there, I can now better express myself, with language skills improved, and have become a more out-going person. The internship also allowed me to experience cultural differences while learning some other languages. Although the programme was full of challenges, I still found this once-in-a-lifetime programme rewarding. I have become more independent and confident after my three months at Disney World. Miss Maymay Lo (Year 2, Physical Education and Recreation Management) 羅曉然同學(體育及康樂管理二年級) The internship has been a great experience for me; I have gained practical experience in the recreation and sports field experience that is very helpful for my future career and my personal growth. I will always uphold PPPAVK which stands for being punctual, prepared, pleasant, attentive, valiant and knowledgeable as guiding my approach to work. Being a lifeguard is more demanding than most people realise. My manager told me that confidence was a key characteristic of a successful lifeguard. My self-confidence was strengthened after I had saved two children from drowning and helped some injured people. Miss Maymay Lo (Front row: 3rd from the left)
6 Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students Summer Sojourn of China Studies Programme (Since 1991) 中國研究課程暑期實習班(自1991年起) The China Studies Programme was established in September 1989. It is aimed at providing students with a broad-based education that includes a solid training in a selected discipline and a multi-disciplinary knowledge base (comprising mainly economics, geography, history, sociology and political science) in addition to mastering knowledge of China. Students are able to develop their general critical and analytical abilities, and enhance their communication skills in Putonghua. The programme consists of four Concentrations, namely Economics, Geography, History and Sociology. A distinct feature of the programme is the Summer Sojourn: all students are required to spend five weeks at Tsinghua University in Beijing at the end of their third year. Students undertake a training course in Putonghua which is offered by language instructors at Tsinghua University. Another part of the Summer Sojourn consists of seminars on topics relating to current issues in mainland China. A total of eight to ten seminars are conducted on issues relating to topics of a political, economic, sociological, historical and geographic nature. The third part of the Summer Sojourn includes field visits to places such as factories, farms, historical sites, government offices and research institutions. Students are also required to complete a small group project relating to social life in Beijing. After studying at Tsinghua University, students gain not only valuable learning experiences at one of the most famous universities in mainland China but also a unique perspective on Chinese society. In 2015, the Programme celebrated its 2sh anniversary by orgainsing a number of year-round events which included an anniversary dinner, Lecture Series on Interdisciplinary Studies, Career Talk Series on Plan Ahead and Prepare: Making Yourself Employable, a series of activities organised with Wei Lun Academic Exchange Centre, as well as publishing the Oral History Book of HKBU Studentcentered Learning Experience in Beijing, 1989-2014: The Summer Sojourn of the China Studies Programme at Tsinghua University. 心 Mr. Lo Chun Wang (Graduate 2013, China Studies - Economics Concentration) 盧俊宏同學(中國研究-經濟學專修2013年畢業生) The Summer Sojourn at Tsinghua university was remarkable. It was a good chance to discover more about China's social and economic developments in a more comprehensive way, by personal observation rather than just learning from books or casual visits to a few cities in southern China. of course, while there I also polished up my Putonghua - one of the languages with the biggest potential in the world right now.
7 Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students Summer Programme with Georgia State University, USA (Since Summer 2015) 與美國喬治亞州立大學合辦暑期課程 (自2015年暑期起) HransnaM Ufban Futures (TNUF) is the Faculty's first transdisciplinary research-led student exchange programme in summer 2015 for a trial of 3 years. Between 19 June and 18 July 2015,10 undergraduate students from HKBU's Departments of Geography, Education Studies, Sociology, and Government and International Studies studied, researched and explored alongside 10 students from Georgia State University (GSU),USA The students formed five cross-cultural research teams. Researching how NGOs with a faith component work alongside government and businesses to support migrants and newcomers, each team conducted interviews and secondary-data analysis in Atlanta. After exploring the world of Coke, shopping at malls, enjoying Independence Day celebrations, kayaking, hiking and camping, the whole class flew back to Hong Kong to continue their comparative research. The HKBU students introduced the Americans to the best of Hong Kong, including speedboats, hikes, home visits, riding on a party tram, etc. The course was jointly led by Dr. Katherine Hankins, Associate Professor, Department of Geosciences, GSU; and Prof. Adrian J. Bailey, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, HKBU who said, "Having the chance to offer this innovative course is a dream that comes true. It's a way to increase the intensity - and rewards - of an exchange programme, because both sets of students rely on each other to survive and thrive in two very distinct settings. They are from very different backgrounds but are on ttie same journey and are jointly responsible for each other. The possibilities for genuine learning and reflection are significant". Dr. Hankins reiterated these sentiments by commenting on the richness of the exchange experience: "It is so rare to have the opportunily to be both the host and the guest in a study-abroad programme. With our Hong Kong and Atlanta students, this 叩portunity was fully realised. Cultural differences and similarities were explored not only in the setting of the university but also in the settings of the home and in the two cities". The Faculty will continue to offer this meaningful course in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Miss Li Yuanyu, Hester (Year 4, Department of Geography) 李沅鈺同學(地理系四年級) What I experienced during the summer course left me with good memories; what I gained the most was from the research experience and collaboration with the American students! From deciding on the research topic to producing the final research report, this was the first time I had an opportunity to complete a whole piece of research. Group members from different cultural and academic backgrounds were able to bring different thoughts and ideas to our research, which added strength to the whole project. I spent a month with the group, not only learned a lot but also gained a lot of friends, which made it a really memorable experience for me. Miss U Yuanyu (2nd from the left)
Experiential Learning Opportunities for Students 學生體驗學習機會 Sun Yat-Sen University - HKBU Exchange Programme (30 July-1 August 2015) 中山大學-香港浸會大學學術交流團 (2015年7月30至8月1日) The Department of Education Studies (EDUC) launched an exchange programme with the School of Education at Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) from 30 July to 1 August 2015. The programme was funded by the Ministry of Education of the PRC. During the exchange period, 25 EDUC students, academic and administrative staff members, visited SYSU's Guangzhou South Campus and Affiliated Middle School. They attended a series of four lectures, on various educational themes, given by Prof. Ma Hing Keung and Dr. Peter Huang from EDUC, and by Prof. Feng Zengjun and Prof. Qu Qiongfei from SYSU (the latter being Associate Dean in the School of Education). These lectures were also attended by over 200 SYSU Master of Education students, who were primary and secondary school teachers in Guangdong. On the final day of the programme, students from the two universities participated in a forum on teaching and learning, with presentations and discussion. Student learning was further enhanced through two briefing and sharing sessions, held before and after the programme. Reflections of participating students and staff will be compiled into a monograph. Miss Chan Kai Shuen (Year 4, English Language & Literature and English Language Teaching Double Degree) 陳啟璇同學(英國語言文學及英語教學雙學位課程四年級) Before the trip, we had prepared for the sharing sessions and I thought I knew what to expect from the educators at sysu, but it turned out that I did not know much about the education system in mainland China after all! Take group learning as an example: I did not expect it to be popular in the mainland, as I thought students there only listen to and learn from their teachers. However, I noticed that the nature of group learning in Hong Kong is different from that in the mainland -we tend to group students for in-class activities in order to perform task-based learning, while students in the mainland seem to be grouped to gain learning experiences outside the classroom. In spite of this difference, the ultimate purpose of the group learning practised in both places is to allow students to learn with and from their peers. Another characteristic we share is that in both places students are expected to graduate not just with good grades but also with high moral standards and a healthy body and mind. There being different cultural and social backgrounds, there are of course variations in terms of teaching practice; yet as educators we are aiming to achieve the same goals.

Why did you choose to work at HKBU in 2013? After getting my PhD, I spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at Kyoto University. My research focus was Southeast Asia and I wanted to stay in the region, so after Japan I came to Hong Kong. I first worked at CUHK for five years; then I came to HKBU. HKBU is more cosmopolitan and has a friendly working environment. Why did you choose human geography as your research focus? Geography allows researchers to look at a particular issue using a diversity of lenses. Geography links the social sciences (history, sociology, economics, psychology, etc.) and the hard sciences (biology, ecology, earth sciences, etc.). I find this particularly interesting. Right now I am doing research on Chinese forest policies, and I look at how history, politics, economics and ecology interact in different locales. What is the most enjoyable thing you and your family have done in Hong Kong? We like hiking and we spent many weekends in the country parks. Now I have two small children, so it s more difficult, but we plan to start again with more serious hikes when the children get older. s Would you please share with us your favourite food in Switzerland? There isn't really much Swiss food. I come from the Italian part of Switzerland, so the local food is similar to that found in Italy. It was a very poor region in the past, so they didn't develop a very sophisticated cuisine. I guess the most typical local dish would be polenta which is made of boiled corn and tastes like boiled corn. My favourite food is French, because of its variety, and Indian, because of its spices.
