Hoi Lam (left) has admitted to PERM via HKBU Elite Athletes Admission Scheme Admitted to HKBU in 2017 via the Elite Athletes Admission Scheme (EAAS), Miss Chan Hoi Lam's (Year 3, Physical Education and Recreation Management [PERM]) talent and performance in synchronised swimming has earned her a place in the HKSAR Team since she was in Form 1. In August 2017, she was awarded the Team Champion, Duet Champion, and Solo Silver Medal at the 2017 Pan Asia Synchronised Swimming Championships. Every week, she has five days of intensive training. Studying PERM Programme after graduated from an associate degree programme, her study workload has become heavier with an increase in pressure too. She greatly appreciates that the Department provides her flexible arrangements, facilitating her participation in sport events. "If I was absent from class due to training, I could still take the examination despite of not having the attendance rate required. A balance between training and study makes me feel good. I may take part in the Asian Games in summer 2018.1 will discuss with my teachers how to coordinate the possible clashes with my internship later." In addition to expressing the gratitude to her mentor, Miss Mak Ka Yee, Elain of the Physical Education (PE) Department, Hoi Lam would like to thank Mr. Kilo Wong and Ms. Assunta Ng respectively for their great support -the former taught her the importance of team spirit while the latter shared the tips for media interviews. She has determined to be a primary school teacher and to promote synchronised swimming after graduation. As HKSAR Teammate in Synchronised Swimming Taking photo with teacher; Mr. Kilo Wong (left), Lecturer of PE Department
Student-teacher Bonding - Leading to Fly High 師生之情—導航萬里 Joining the departmental activity 參與學系的活動 Mr. LauTszWing (Year 2, PERM), a member of the Hong Kong Team In Wushu since 2010, has taken part in several national and international games and clinched the 3" Runner-up (Men's Taolu - Nanquan & Nangu力 at the 2017 Universiade held in Taipei in August 2017. Facing the challenges of competition, study and training at the same time, he was very impressed by the support from teachers of PE Department. He recalled that he was absent in the first two weeks of Year 1 because of the training. As a freshman, he felt as if he was suddenly in a maze. Fortunately, lecturers understood his situation and explained the main points of the lessons so as to help him adapt easily to university life. Tsz Wing said, "Not knowing about time management at the beginning, I just focused on Wushu and got unsatisfactory academic results in the first semester. So lucky to have the guidance from my mentor, Miss Mak Ka Yee, Elain, I was reminded of setting up a timetable to strike a good balance between training, competition and study. She chatted with me regularly to follow up my study progress. As a result, my academic performance improved! With the timely advice from my teachers, I have the motivation to strive for excellence because I do not want to waste the valuable opportunity provided by the Department and University." He appreciated that the Department also valued the athletes who engaged in the "less popular" sports. The support from Prof. Chung Pak Kwong, Head of PE, Dr. Chen Kuan Chou and Ms. Assunta Ng in the Department let him feel warm. Tsz Wing joined HKBU via EAAS and was awarded a scholarship. He also acts as a sports ambassador to promote sports culture and healthy lifestyle in primary and secondary schools two to three times each year. "After being admitted to the PERM, I really enjoy the fun of study, especially interested in Exercise Physiology and Human Anatomy. Unlike other institutions, our PERM Programme also covers the topic of recreation management which helps us broaden our horizons and career path. I would like to pursue a master's degree in physical therapy overseas after graduation." Taking photo with Ms. Assunta Ng (left), Lecturer of PE Department
Student-teacher Bonding - Leading to Ry High Development of a Lifelong Bonding with the Department and Teachers - Social Work Fieldwork Chan Ka Ki (2017 Graduate, Social Work) recalled his fieldwork in the Social Services Department of The Yuen Yuen Institute (School Support Team) with the service targets of primary and secondary school students during his fourth study year. From theory to reality, Ka Ki did not know how to handle well at the beginning. The frustrated experience from fieldwork practice discouraged him very much. He even questioned whether he should be a social worker. With the inspiration from Dr. Sharon Leung, Lecturer of the Social Work Department, he persevered with his study and was able to cope with the challenge. "I was responsible for organising extra-curricular group activities for students. Owing to a lack of fieldwork experience, I could not make use of the theories and skills learnt from classes to manage the activities well. Sharon reviewed with me and asked me some questions: What are the goals of the activities? Is learning a subject matter the most important? I understood that the school students were quite tired after attending a whole day of lessons. Requesting them to follow my instructions to learn was not easy. Therefore, I started to think from their perspective and re-build my values. Then I organised some enjoyable activities to let students understand themselves, instead of inculcating knowledge to ttiem." Dr. Sharon Leung believes her responsibility is to help her students discover and apply their own knowledge, beliefs, and abilities, and then face the challenges of fieldwork and their future careers with confidence. "Ka Ki sets his standards high and strives to be the best. Although he encountered difficulties or setbacks during his fieldwork, I helped him realise his own ability. Sometimes I cannot just focus on the so-called 'failure' or 'setback' but also hope that Ka Ki can discover his success' and 'satisfaction'. In fact, he works very hard and is able to establish reliable relationships with the students. He can understand their thoughts that the others do not understand!" Ka Ki knew that Dr. Leung was concerned about not only whether he could be a social worker, but also his happy work life. He finally decided to be a social worker. After graduation, Ka Ki has still kept contact with Dr. Leung, describing their relationship as "permanent commitment". Ka Ki (「ighq shared his joy of graduation with Dr. Sharon Leung.
Student-teacher Bonding - Leading to Fly High Ka Ki's elder schoolmate, Mr. Kung Wai Sum, who graduated in 2000, is now working at The Boys' & Girls1 Clubs Association of Hong Kong. He elaborated on his sense of belonging to the Social Work Department. "Originally, I did not want to study social work. My academic results were poor in Year 1 due to my unmotivated learning intention and low attendance rate. After meeting with the Department Head, I was surprised that a professor would listen and care about my feelings, and suddenly I had a good impression of the Department" Sum started his fieldwork at the Pneumoconiosis Mutual Aid Association in Year 2. He noticed that the workers lacked support and protection, and was disappointed that the society neglected those who had contribution to Hong Kong. The death of workers gave him deeper understanding of the social injustice. At that time, Prof. Victor Wong supervised his fieldwork. "I got the support from Prof. Wong. He patted my shoulder and let me feel his empathy, telling me that social workers had to strive for equal treatment at the grassroots level. He also broadened my horizons and ignited my sense of mission. Once again I felt the enthusiasm of my teacher and began to like studying social work, hoping to contribute to the society. From that point, I studied hard to obtain better academic results." Prof. Victor Wong said, "My role is to help students adapt to the fieldwork as soon as possible based on their ability. Sum then returned to the Department to study the Master of Social Work and I could teach him again. I was touched by Sum's determination for justice and warm-heartedness towards the Department" Sum said that the Social Work Department was his home. Graduated for many years, he continued to contribute to the Department, such as by sharing his fieldwork experience with younger schoolmates and serving as an interviewer in admission interviews, as well as the honour projects' supervisor of the Associate Degree Programme.

The Faculty of Social Sciences organises diversified events to develop caring bonds with students and thus nurture their healthy development. Hoping to promote health, unity and team-building, the Faculty has organised the AAB Run since 2014. Participants are required to run in the Academic and Administration Building (AAB) and complete tasks at different checkpoints. Staff and students are welcome to form mixed teams to enjoy this exciting experience. Miss Pang Yu Tung, Jessie (Year 4, China Studies - Geography) participated in the AAB Run with Dr. Chun Kwok Pan and Dr. Lachlan B. Barber, Assistant Professors in the Geography Department in January 2017. She greatly enjoyed the Run, "Drs. Chun and Barber are both my lecturers, but we are more like friends than having a teacher-student relationship. We drew different things related to Geography on each other's T-shirts. Since both of them ran faster than me, it took me much effort to catch up with their pace. I think the AAB Run is a good way to foster a closer relationship between us as we seldom have time to gather together to chill out and have fun during the busy term time." It was great to have activities with colleagues and students outside the lecture halls. Solving the crazy tasks was great fun. Jessie, Lachlan, and I needed to think outside Hie box and get to know each other. By working together, we built our trust and formed a teacher-student bond」Dr. Chun Kwok Pan said. Their bonding did not stop after the Run. Dr. Chun is now a friend of Jessie on Facebook. They can "like" each other's posts. On Chun's social media page, he usually lets his students know how he feels about what it is going on at HKBU. Through social media, he also learns what they think about their lives. If you are our alumni, do these stories sound familiar? The Faculty of Social Sciences hosted the 5th Global Social Sciences Graduate Student Conference, which stimulated interesting multi-disciplinary discussions around the main theme -"Development and Polarisation" on 21 April 2017. Prof. Adrian J. Bailey, Dean of the Faculty, welcomed all participants to the event. He said, "Our world is never static and so, this evolving state of affairs around us cannot simply be divided into positive or negative, black or white, we must acknowledge and explore the grey matter in between." He encouraged participants to openly share their thoughts and enjoy the Conference.
